Rejoice brings together two major figures in African music: Nigerian Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. Recorded largely in London in 2010 and completed after Masekela’s death, the album combines Afrobeat, jazz and South African musical traditions in a spacious, deeply rhythmic set. Highlights include “Robbers, Thugs and Muggers (O’Galajani),” “Agbada Bougou,” “Slow Bones” and “Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be the Same).”
