Roy Eldridge’s Montreux ’77 captures the legendary jazz trumpeter in a live quartet performance at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival. Eldridge’s fiery trumpet playing and expressive phrasing are supported by a swinging rhythm section, moving between energetic improvisation and relaxed, blues-inflected passages. This 1989 US reissue on Original Jazz Classics is an excellent document of one of jazz’s great trumpet players.
