Magnolia Electric Co.’s Josephine is a 2009 album built around Jason Molina’s stark songwriting and the band’s restrained blend of country rock, folk and slow-burning indie rock. Written in the aftermath of the death of bassist Evan Farrell, the record carries a reflective, elegiac quality, with Molina’s direct vocals surrounded by pedal steel, organ and spacious arrangements. Highlights include “O! Grace,” “Shenandoah” and the title track “Josephine.”
