Kenny Drew Quintet / Quartet presents the pianist in two compact small-group settings from his early Riverside period. Drew’s crisp, lyrical piano is joined by musicians including Donald Byrd on trumpet and Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, placing the session firmly in the emerging hard bop sound of the mid-1950s. Direct, swinging and beautifully economical, it is a fine example of Drew’s work as both pianist and leader.
