Jon Hassell’s Dream Theory in Malaya: Fourth World Volume Two is a key 1981 work in his exploration of what he called “Fourth World” music. Produced with Brian Eno, the album combines Hassell’s electronically treated trumpet with percussion, ambient electronics and rhythmic ideas drawn from Southeast Asian music. Hypnotic, atmospheric and highly distinctive, it remains an important meeting point between ambient, experimental and world music.
