James P. Johnson’s 1921–26 collects early recordings by one of the foundational figures of stride piano and jazz. Johnson’s powerful left-hand rhythms, sophisticated harmonies and blues-inflected playing helped shape the Harlem stride style and influenced pianists including Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. This 1974 Olympic Records collection offers an excellent window into his pioneering work of the 1920s.
