Fairground Attraction’s The First of a Million Kisses is the band’s 1988 debut, combining acoustic pop, folk, jazz and country influences around Eddi Reader’s distinctive vocals. Produced with a warm, uncluttered sound, the album became a major UK success and remains an engaging example of late-1980s songwriting outside the era’s more heavily produced mainstream. Highlights include “Perfect,” “Find My Love,” “Clare” and “A Smile in a Whisper.”
