Love Calls brings together two highly distinctive tenor saxophonists, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Paul Gonsalves, in a relaxed session centred on standards and ballads. Davis’s robust, blues-rich tone contrasts beautifully with the more flowing, lyrical approach of longtime Duke Ellington saxophonist Gonsalves. The result is warm, unhurried mainstream jazz built around the individual character of two great tenor players.
