Dexter Gordon’s Sophisticated Giant is a 1977 session that places his commanding tenor saxophone within an expanded ensemble arranged and conducted by Slide Hampton. Gordon is joined by an impressive cast including Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, Frank Wess and Howard Johnson, giving the music a rich orchestral texture while retaining its hard-bop foundation.
