Chico Hamilton's The Dealer, originally released on Impulse! Records in 1966, is an adventurous recording that blends post-bop, soul jazz and the emerging sounds of jazz fusion. Featuring the celebrated drummer and bandleader alongside musicians including guitarist Larry Coryell, saxophonist and flautist Jerome Richardson and bassist Richard Davis, the album combines driving rhythms, blues-inflected improvisation and inventive ensemble arrangements. Coryell's distinctive electric guitar playing brings an additional edge to Hamilton's sophisticated compositions, capturing a period of considerable experimentation in American jazz.
